A hilarious, campy satire of show business that follows Tina, an eight-year-old with talent, ambition, and no limits. This outrageous cult favorite skewers Broadway musicals, stage mothers, child stars, and the price of fame. Think over-the-top, larger-than-life characters and big comedy.
👉 Roles are written with big comedy, strong vocals, and camp style in mind. We encourage performers to make bold, outrageous choices at auditions!
Please bring three headshots and resumes to the audition and prepare to (or your parent/guardian) fill out an audition form and sign a media consent.
Please prepare a 16-bar cut of a song that shows off your voice in the style of the show. Also prepare an alternate song. Bring backing tracks that are able to be hooked up via bluetooth, via airdrop, or via text message or be prepared to sing acapella. An accompanist will be not be present.
Adult roles pay a stipend (varies by role). Minors are unpaid and considered volunteers.
Please note that the role of Tina Denmark involves comedic portrayals of violence, including scenes where the character commits an on-stage “murder.” All actions are staged in an exaggerated, over-the-top, and satirical manner consistent with the campy style of the musical.
This role is best suited for a child actor (age 8–12) who can handle dark comedy with maturity, focus, and professionalism.
All cast members must be comfortable with this.
Soprano/Belter. Cute, charming, and wildly talented. Tina is a child star with killer ambition (literally). Needs strong singing, dancing, and comedic timing. Must convincingly play “sweet little girl” and “menacing diva.” MUST be able to tap dance with proficiency. This is a triple threat STAR role.
*** Will also be casting an understudy for this role.
Soprano/Belter. Tina’s sweet, suburban mother who discovers her own ruthless streak as the story unfolds. Starts as timid housewife and transforms into a glamorous Broadway diva. A huge, showy role with lots of comedy and a big vocal range.
*** Will also be casting an understudy for this role.
Alto/Belter. Over-the-top talent agent who takes Tina under her wing. Must command the stage with camp flair and exaggerated Broadway energy. Traditionally cast with a male actor in drag, but open to all.
Alto/Mezzo. Judy’s mother and a respected theatre critic who despises musicals. Wry, sarcastic, and brutally honest. A dry comedic powerhouse.
Mezzo-Soprano/Alto. Tina’s rival at school. Spoiled, untalented, and destined to “accidentally” lose her starring role. A funny cameo role that requires great comedic timing.
Mezzo-Soprano/Belter. Judy’s eager personal assistant who will stop at nothing to get her own shot at stardom. Clever, manipulative, and you guessed it - ruthless.
Smaller, comic ensemble parts may be doubled depending on casting, including reporters, theatre folk, and additional over-the-top characters. May also understudy larger roles.
Boys and girls. Smaller, comic ensemble parts may be doubled depending on casting, including classmates, theatre participants, and additional over-the-top characters. May also understudy larger roles.
