A hilarious and heartwarming holiday comedy about the outrageous Herdman kids who crash the annual church Christmas pageant. Chaos ensues, but in the end, the community discovers the true meaning of Christmas. Perfect for families and full of fun roles for actors of all ages.
👉 Roles are available for children, teens, and adults of all backgrounds and experience levels. We encourage diverse casting and welcome newcomers to the stage!
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a play with music. The cast does not need to be singers, however they will be singing holiday songs.
Please bring a headshot and resume to the audition and prepare to (or your parent/guardian) fill out an audition form and sign a media consent.
Please prepare and memorize a 1-minute monologue that demonstrates your acting abilities.
If you are a singer and are auditioning for Beth, Grace, Imogen, or Alice, please also prepare a 16-bar musical theatre style ballad that shows your range. For those singing, you will either be singing acapella or you will need a recording as an accompanist will not be present. We will have a speaker for you to connect to via bluetooth.
Adult roles pay a stipend (varies by role). Children are unpaid and considered volunteers.
Actor's cast as a Herdman will be required to act like bullies as well be depicted as highly disrespectful to the Christmas story and to authority in a good portion of the play. They will also be mimicking behavior such as smoking, violence, and destruction of property.
At the beginning of their journey, the Herdman's make light of one child's weight. Everything in the play moves the story forward and is done to show the growth of the characters and not to isolate, discriminate, or make fun of any one person or group of people.
All cast members must be comfortable with this.
The narrator of the story. Smart, funny, and observant. Often the voice of reason. This role has a significant amount of dialogue and requires an actress who is able to memorize quickly. Would prefer an actress who can sing for this role, but not required.
The well-meaning, slightly frazzled mom who unexpectedly ends up directing the Christmas pageant. Warm, practical, and determined. Would prefer an actress who can sing for this role, but not required. This role pays a $350 stipend.
Grace’s good-natured husband. Tries to stay out of the drama but ultimately supports his wife. This role pays a $300 stipend.
Beth’s younger brother. Mischievous and outspoken.
Tough, bossy, and a natural leader. Cast as Mary. Would prefer an actress who can sing for this role, but not required.
The youngest and wildest; cast as the Angel of the Lord.
The oldest Herdman boy. Cast as Joseph.
Quick-tempered and scrappy.
Rough-and-tumble troublemaker.
Always following his brothers’ lead.
A goody-goody perfectionist and Beth’s rival. Cast as Mary until Imogene takes over. Would prefer an actress who can sing and dance for this role, but not required.
Bossy church member who usually runs the pageant until illness forces her to step aside. This role pays a $250 stipend.
Supportive minister who tries to keep peace in the church. This role pays a $200 stipend.
Friends, classmates, and Sunday school/pageant participants (Shepherds, Wise Men, Angels, etc.). Plenty of ensemble opportunities for children.
Comic ensemble of gossipy, opinionated church members. These roles pay a $150 stipend.
